Compression Garments
Compression garments can be helpful in managing lymphedema and scar management in a noninvasive manner. The compression helps the scars to minimize because the compression causes the collagen – an abundant protein in connective tissues and skin – to lay down in a parallel fashion so it does not become raised. Compression garments minimize the itching that is a side effect of surgery and radiation, provide more comfort, and normalize the pigmentation of the scars so that they blend in more with the patient’s normal skin surface.
Your physical therapist can recommend various compression garments that will assist you in your healing process, measure and fit you, and follow your progress.
